Depending on the application, this is possible in the UV-/VIS-/NIR- and IR-spectrum. Only the surface is subject to measurement in case of solid materials. However, regarding liquids and gases, the measurement takes place through a sample cell that contains the material. In this case, the sample cell depth depends on the required measuring range and the transmittance characteristic of the material to be measured.
